Multi-Process Capability
While primarily a MIG (Gas Metal Arc Welding) machine, most modern inverters of this size are multi-function:
-
MIG/MAG: (Metal Inert/Active Gas) Welding—the main function, used for speed and efficiency with solid wire and shielding gas.
-
MMA/Stick (ARC): (Manual Metal Arc) Welding—used for welding thicker materials, often outdoors or on dirty/rusty metals.
-
Lift TIG: (Tungsten Inert Gas) Welding—sometimes included for more precise welding of thinner metals (usually DC only).
2. High Power and Duty Cycle
-
Max Output Current: 400 Amperes (A). This high current allows the welding of very thick plate metal in a single pass or continuous heavy fabrication work.
-
Duty Cycle: Typically around 60% at 400A. A 60% duty cycle means the machine can weld at its maximum output of 400A for 6 minutes out of every 10-minute period before needing to cool down. This is an industrial-grade rating.
-
IGBT Inverter Technology: The use of IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) technology makes the machine much lighter, more compact, and more energy-efficient than older transformer-based welders. It also provides a very stable arc.
3. Wire Capacity and Feeding
-
Wire Spool Size: Often capable of handling large 20 kg (44 lb) wire spools, designed for high-volume, continuous use.
-
Wire Feeder: Many 400A industrial models feature a portable, separate wire feeder. This allows the heavy main power source to remain stationary while the welder carries the lighter feeder to perform work at a distance.
